Minimum age

18+ casinos near me: where 18 is enough, and where it is not

The minimum age for a casino floor is set by the state, and then raised by the property whenever alcohol is served where the games are. That second half is why a list of "18+ casinos" goes stale so quickly, and why this page gives you the rule that holds instead — with the map to find what is close and the operator's own site to confirm the door policy.

Why there is no age table on this page

Every directory publishes one, and every one of them is partly wrong. Three separate authorities set the age you meet at the door, only the first is a single public document, and the third can change its mind between your search and your drive.

  • The state legislature

Sets the floor for the casinos a state licenses itself. It is one public document per state, it changes rarely, and it is the only one of the three a directory could keep current without help.

  • The tribal-state compact

Governs casinos on tribal land, and there is one per tribe rather than one per state. Two properties an hour apart in the same state can be operating under different compacts with different minimums.

  • The property itself

Raises its own age whenever it wants to, and almost always does the moment it serves alcohol where the games are. It announces the change on its own website and nowhere else.

This site does not publish facts it cannot source, and a 44-row table assembled from three unequal sources would be the biggest unsourced claim on it — on the one question where being wrong costs a reader a wasted drive, or a refusal at the door in front of everyone they came with. When we can source all three per state, the table appears here, and it will say which of the three each number came from.

What is reliable in the meantime is the shape of the rule, below, and the operator's own visitor page. It takes one search and it is right today.

Why the property has the last word

Two forces push a floor from 18 to 21. The first is alcohol: in most states a licence to serve drinks where gambling happens comes with a 21 door, and a resort would rather run one age for the whole building than police a line through the middle of it. The second is the compact or licence a tribal operator holds, which can set its own minimum above the state's.

Both of those are decisions a business makes, which is the part a table cannot hold. A floor that admitted 18-year-olds for a decade becomes a 21 floor the week a bar opens on it, and nothing about the state, the compact or the building changes to announce it. The same works in reverse: a card room that drops table service can lower its own door again. This is why the pages on this site that carry a list carry hours and locations — the fields that change slowly enough to be worth publishing — and send the age question to the operator.

The practical consequence is that two casinos an hour apart in the same state can have different doors, and that a state's headline age tells you what to expect rather than what you will meet. Where 18 does turn up, it turns up most often on a floor with no bar service on it: a card room, a bingo hall, or a tribal property whose licensed rooms are kept separate from the games.

One building can run several ages at once

"Can I get in at 18" and "can I play at 18" are different questions, and at a large resort they often have different answers. The restriction is usually on the gaming floor rather than on the building, so the hotel, the restaurants, the theatre and the pool can be open to you while the floor between them is not. Some properties let under-age guests cross the floor on a marked route to reach the rest; others will not let them stop on it at all, and a member of staff will say so within a few steps.

The activities split too. A property can hold one age for its gaming floor, another for retail sports betting, and a third for lottery terminals or bingo, because those are licensed separately — so "the age here is 21" from one counter is not an answer about the next one. If the reason for the trip is a specific game, ask about that game rather than about the building, and ask before the drive rather than at the door.

What to check before you drive

Four steps, in this order. The whole sequence takes about five minutes and it is right on the day you do it, which is more than any published table can claim.

  1. Find what is actually close

The map ranks properties by how far you have to drive, not by which city they sit in — worth doing first, because the answer changes which sites you then have to check.

  2. Open the property's own site

The age lives on a visitor, FAQ or "know before you go" page. 373 of the 980 properties here have a site on file, linked from every table on this site.

  3. Phone if the site is silent

A plain question to the switchboard — "what is the minimum age on the gaming floor?" — is answered in under a minute, and it is answered by the people who will be on the door.

  4. Take a physical ID

A photograph of a licence on a phone is not accepted anywhere, and a floor that has been fined once checks everyone who looks under thirty.

Gambling at 18: common questions

Can you go into a casino at 18?

In some states and at some properties, yes. Where the state sets 18 as the floor, tribal casinos and card rooms commonly admit 18-year-olds; where alcohol is served on the gaming floor, the property almost always sets 21 regardless. It is the property that decides, which is why this page gives you the rule and the property's own site gives you the answer.

Which states have 18+ casinos?

There is no list this site can publish honestly yet. The minimum is set by state law for commercial floors, by compact for tribal ones, and raised to 21 by the property whenever alcohol is served where the games are — three sources, only one of which is a single public document. Until we can source all three per state, this page gives you the rule and the property gives you the number.

Can you enter a casino at 18 if you do not gamble?

Often, and it is a different question from whether you can play. Many resorts are hotels, restaurants and concert venues with a gaming floor in the middle, and the age restriction is on the floor rather than on the building. Some properties let under-age guests walk a marked route through the floor to reach the rest of it; others do not let them stop anywhere on it. Both policies are normal and only the property can tell you which one it runs.

What happens if you are under age at a casino?

You are refused at the door, and if you got past it, any winnings are void — states treat underage gambling as the operator's licensing problem, so floors check ID hard. Carry a physical photo ID: a photo of one on a phone is not accepted anywhere.

Is the age the same for sports betting and the casino floor?

Not always. Several states set one age for a casino floor and another for retail sports betting or the lottery, and a property with all three can be running two different door policies at once.

Do 18+ casinos serve alcohol?

Where they do, it is usually not on the gaming floor. The pairing that produces an 18 door is a floor with no bar service on it, and the property keeps its licensed rooms separate — which is also why an 18+ floor can turn into a 21 floor after a refurbishment that adds one.
