Privacy: what this site does and does not collect

Short version: no account, no cookie, no analytics, no advertising network. Your location, if you share it, is used in your own browser and is never transmitted anywhere. The long version below says the same thing in detail, and the last section shows you how to check it rather than asking you to take it on trust.

What a page on this site actually loads

Most of what a privacy policy has to disclose is a consequence of what the page loads. This one loads almost nothing, so there is almost nothing to disclose — and that is a build decision rather than a promise.

  • Everything from this domain

Type, styles, scripts, icons and photographs are all served from casinosnear.com. No font CDN, no icon service, no shared library host — so no third party learns you read this page.

  • Nothing embedded

No comment widget, no social embed, no video player, no tag manager, no advertising network, and not a single iframe anywhere on the site.

  • Map tiles, once you ask

The only request that leaves this domain, and it does not happen until you interact with the map. Until then the map you see is drawn from a static file served from here.

In detail

Your location

Pressing "use my location" asks your browser for a position through the standard geolocation permission, which your browser — not this site — decides whether to grant. The coordinates are used on the page to sort casinos by distance and are held in memory for as long as the tab is open. They are not sent to this site's server, not stored, and not written to your device. Close the tab and they are gone; reload the page and you will be asked again.

The distance ranking is computed in the page for the same reason. Sending your position to a server to be sorted there would be simpler to write and would mean a server that knows where every visitor is standing, which is not a trade worth making for a directory.

Cookies and storage

None are set. The site keeps no session, has no login, and does not remember you between visits. Anything you select — a filter, a favourite, a drive-time band — lives in the page until you close it. There is also no consent banner, because a banner exists to record a choice about cookies and there are none to choose about.

Analytics

There is no analytics script on this site: no page-view counter, no heatmap, no tag manager, no advertising pixel. That is a deliberate cost — it means nobody here knows which pages are read or which searches fail, and the site is changed on the basis of the data it publishes rather than the data it collects about readers.

The map tiles

The one third-party request the site makes. Map imagery is fetched from OpenFreeMap, a free, keyless, donation-funded tile service, and only once you interact with the map — before that the map you see is drawn from a static file served by this site. Fetching a tile tells that service your IP address and which tiles you asked for, in the same way as loading any image from any host. No identifier of yours is attached, because this site has none to attach. Which tiles you asked for is a coarse indication of the area you were looking at, and if that matters to you, the pages themselves — the state and city directories — are readable without ever touching the map.

Links to casinos

Outbound links go to operators' own websites and to a maps app for directions. Once you follow one you are on someone else's site under their policy, not this one — and an operator's own site is very likely to run the analytics and advertising this one does not. Links open withrel="noopener", so the page you land on cannot reach back into the tab it came from, but nothing here can extend this policy over it.

Server logs

Requests to this site are served as static files by its host, whose ordinary access logs record IP address, time and the page requested. That is the host's operational logging, not analytics, and it is not linked to anything else — there is nothing to link it to. It is the one record of your visit that exists anywhere, and it exists in the same way it does for every site on the web.

Children

This is a directory of venues that are age-restricted everywhere they operate, and it is not aimed at anyone under the minimum gambling age. Nothing here is collected from anybody, so nothing is collected from a child either.

How to check any of this yourself

A privacy page is a claim, and a claim about a static website is one of the few a reader can verify from the outside in a couple of minutes. Here is how, in the order that takes the least time.

  1. Read the page source

Right-click and "view source". Every src and href on the page is a path on this domain — there is nothing to find because there is nothing there.

  2. Watch the network

Open your browser's developer tools, reload, and sort the network list by domain. Everything is casinosnear.com until you touch the map, and then one more host appears: the tile service.

  3. Look for the cookies

The storage or application panel of the same developer tools lists cookies, local storage and session storage for the site. All three are empty, before and after you share your location.

  4. Turn JavaScript off

The pages still work: the tables, the guides and the state directories are plain HTML. What you lose is the live map and distance sorting — which is exactly the part that needs your location.

If any of this changes

If anything on this page stops being true — an analytics tool, a cookie, an affiliate arrangement — this page is updated in the same change that introduces it, rather than afterwards. That is the only version of a privacy notice that is worth anything: one that cannot describe the site as it was last year, because it ships with the site as it is.
